Cloudscapes is a collaborative series with photographer/filmmaker Sebastiaan Hoekman, created in our shared studio Leaping Sundog. The works merge photographic screen printing with abstract painting on canvas, developed through an ongoing dialogue between image and material. At the heart of the series lies our shared interest in impermanence, natural rhythms, and the balance between control and chance.
We begin with Sebastiaan’s photographs of cumulus clouds, each one a captured breath in time. These images are screen printed in carefully sequenced layers, one segment at a time. Each section must be exposed, printed, and dried before the next can begin. The process is slow and deliberate, like reconstructing something that has already disappeared.
The canvases themselves are prepared through intuitive staining with natural pigments, inks, and paints. These marks are not backgrounds but landscapes of their own: echoes of erosion, water, and soil.
Every stage requires waiting: for light, for pigment, for the print to take, or resist. We embrace imperfection. The result is neither photograph nor painting, but something we call Cloudscapes.
